Last night I attended an event on supporting diversity in the legal profession. Good event, great turnout, interesting comments and questions.
It made me reflect, as most things do, that diversity and inclusion is no doubt a hot button topic; but it’s not a trend. It’s not a phase and to be frank, it’s not a choice.
There are numerous studies and statistics which support the business case for diversity and inclusion in the work place. It’s not only the right thing to do; it’s the profitable thing to do. As lawyers and advocates, the former should be enough motivation…
I urge you to step outside of your comfort zone and get to know someone who you think, or see as “different.” You’ll not only learn something new about them, you may learn something new about yourself and who knows, you may discover that underneath all that diversity, we’re not all that different anyway.
The future isn’t female nor is it fluid.
The future is a mosaic of skills, knowledge and talent, colour, shapes and sizes, genders, age and sexuality.
The future is art. The future is science. The future is law and mathematics.
The future is a mosaic.
The future is you.
What will your piece of the mosaic reflect?
