Legal Advice

Preparing for your initial consultation

We understand that meeting a lawyer can be daunting, but it is important to seek legal advice as soon as possible so that you are aware of your rights, entitlements and any time limitations which may be involved in your matter. We have provided the information below to help you prepare and feel better about the process.

The initial consultation is our opportunity to understand what has brought you to us and what you would like to achieve. Its also an opportunity to ask any specific questions you may have. You can also expect:

Confidentiality. Anything you discuss with us during the initial consultation is confidential– unless it involves harming someone, or yourself. We are here to act in your best interests, so the more information you provide us, the more accurate advice we can provide.

Competence. We take pride in providing quality service and solutions. We rely on our legal knowledge, skill and diligence to address your particular needs and circumstances and work to deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions.

Transparency. Its important to us that you are able to make an informed decision at every stage (including whether to engage our services!). That’s why we’ll ask you to provide detailed instructions and may ask certain questions to help us better understand your situation. We can then determine which law(s) apply, how they apply to your situation in particular and potential options, their outcomes, how much each is likely to cost and how long each option is likely to take.

We will also discuss pricing and payment options for our services.

At the end of the consultation, you’ll have the opportunity to ask any additional questions and discuss next steps.  If we feel that we cannot meet our professional obligations to you, we may refuse your booking or refer you to another provider. We will also let you know if we can only assist in limited capacities and/or tasks so both parties have a clear understanding of the scope of services to be provided.

If you’ve already booked a consultation, you may have already been asked for these documents. If you’re still contemplating booking a consultation, it would be helpful to have these documents handy.

  • A list of any specific questions you have.
  • Any relevant documents
  • Any letters or documents from any other interested parties

If you’re unsure whether a document is relevant or not, feel free to bring it to the consultation anyway.

If you do not have any or all of the above documents right away, don’t worry – and don’t put off obtaining legal advice.

We will still be able to proceed with a consultation and preliminary advice, so as long as you are able to provide a rough idea of what is involved.

Your initial consultation is free.

An initial consultation can take anywhere between 20 – 60 minutes.

Yourself! If you feel more comfortable bringing a support person with you, you may do so.
